Dr. El-Hussuna holds an impressive array of academic qualifications in the fields of medicine, surgery, and information technology. He earned his Ph.D. in Surgery from Aalborg University and, prior to that, completed a Master's degree in Information Technology (M.Sc.) from IT University-Copenhagen.

Dr. El-Hussuna has a distinguished career marked by significant contributions to both the medical and academic communities. He is the leader of the OpenSourceResearch collaboration, an international research organization (OSRC.network), and serves as the Chairperson and founding member of the European Society of Colo-Proctology (ESCP) cohort studies committee. His expertise is further recognized through his membership in the Surgical Steering Committee of the European Crohn Colitis Organisation (S-ECCO).

With an extensive publication record, Dr. El-Hussuna has authored 125 articles in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, including international guidelines for the treatment of IBD. His editorial contributions are notable as well, serving as an editor for prestigious journals such as the British Journal of Surgery and PLOS ONE.

His commitment to the education and training of young surgeons is demonstrated through his role as the Danish Health Authority’s inspector, in addition to his role as an examiner in medicine and surgery. Furthermore, he is an active member of the ESCP education committee and has reviewed ECCO grants and fellowships in 2023 and 2024, as well as EAES grants in 2023 and 2024. His passion for research and innovation is reflected in his international activities.
